🔔 We have three first-time co-sponsors for H.R.1841, the Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act! Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA-21), Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI-2), and Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY-9) are the latest congressional leaders supporting the only bill seeking to end the Korean War in Congress, bringing the total to 45 co-sponsors. Thank you to our grassroots advocates who have tirelessly educated and demonstrated to their representatives why we must end the Korean War and pursue genuine diplomacy to de-escalate tensions on the Korean peninsula.
This year, constituent Beka Yang, along with Korea Peace Advocacy Week coordinator Kate Parsons, met with Rep. Seth Magaziner’s office to discuss how important peace-focused policies like H.R.1841 are. Beka shared her personal story as a Rhode Islander and Korean American growing up with the impacts of family separation, trauma, and mental health struggles resulting from the Korean War. She advocated for the Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act on behalf of her grandparents, who grew up during the war, in hopes that a formal resolution to the war would bring about meaningful change and some resolution for her loved ones.
Korea Peace Advocacy Week coordinator Jennifer Deibert (American Friends Service Committee), along with several constituents, also met with Rep. Jim Costa’s office in 2024 to advocate for the Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act. They shared what ending the war would mean for those in Korea and the US: “We do not want a war on the Korean Peninsula,” Jennifer said. “It would be devastating for the US, and it would be devastating for South Korea and North Korea. And at all costs, we must continue to pursue a different future and that requires trust building and people-to-people interaction if we want to change that future.”
Participant Marn Cha also drew connections between the US travel ban on North Korea continuing to divide families separated by the war to the threat of family separation and deportation facing immigrant and undocumented families.
👏 Thank you to all the constituents for your hard work advocating peace! We are collectively democratizing US foreign policy!
