International Women’s Delegation to Join South Korean Women Activists to Walk for Peace
국제 여성 대표단, 한국 여성 활동가들과 함께 평택 평화 걷기 행사에 참여
30명의 여성 평화 활동가 대표단이 평화를 촉구하며 비무장지대를 역사적으로 횡단한 지 10년 만에, 위민크로디엠지 (Women Cross DMZ)가 조직한 디아스포라 페미니스트 평화 지도자들로 구성된 국제 대표단이 2025년 5월 24일 평화와 군축을 위한 세계 여성의 날에 한국 평택에서 한국 여성 활동가들과 함께 평화 걷기 행사에 참여할 예정입니다.
경기여성네트워크은 2015년 이후 매년 경기지역 여성들과 함께 평화와 상생의 한반도를 염원하며 평화걷기를 개최해 왔습니다. 2025년에는 특별히 Women Cross DMZ 10주년을 맞아 그 날을 기념하고 남북관계의 회복 및 성평등 관점의 평화를 기원하며 다시 함께 걷고자 합니다. 평택 캠프 험프리스 미군기지 외곽에서 개최되는 이 행사는 아직 해결되지 않은 전쟁과 만연한 군사주의에 대한 경각심을 일깨우는데 그 뜻이 있습니다.
이번 국제 대표단에는 아프가니스탄계 미국인, 미국 원주민, 한국계 미국인, 그리고 미국에 거주하는 남아시아계 페미니스트 지도자들이 포함됩니다. 미국에서는 민주주의가 위협받고 있고, 한국은 새 대통령 선거를 앞두고 있으며, 미중 갈등이 고조되면서 동북아시아에서 전쟁 위험이 높아지고 있는 상황에서, 이들의 초국가적 연대는 특히 시의적절합니다.
경기여성네트워크 상임대표 이정아는 "한국 여성들은 70년 넘게 해결되지 않은 전쟁의 그늘 속에서 군사화, 분단, 그리고 이산의 짐을 짊어지고 살아왔습니다. 우리는 전 세계 자매들과 함께 한국 여성들이 평화와 군축을 요구한다는 것을 보여주기 위해 행동에 나서고 있습니다"라고 말했습니다.
"한국 여성인권단체들은 전쟁과 군사주의가 여성의 권리와 성평등을 해를 끼치고 있다는 것을 지속적으로 강조해 왔습니다. 한반도의 전쟁을 종식하기 위해서는 세계 여성들과 함께 국제적 연대가 매우 중요하기 때문에 우리는 국제 여성들과 함께 걷고자 합니다. 아시아기독교협의회 실행위원이자 한국여성평화운동네트워크 전 사무총장인 조영미는 이렇게 말했습니다.
우리는 한국과 미국, 그리고 전 세계적으로 민주주의를 위협하는 군사주의가 놀랍도록 확대되는 것을 목격하고 있습니다. 국제 페미니스트로서 우리는 한국 여성들과 연대하며 항구적인 평화를 촉구합니다." 라고 위민 크로스 디엠지 (Women Cross DMZ)의 사무총장인 캐시 최(Cathi Choi)는 말했습니다.
미국은 아프가니스탄에서 한국에 이르기까지 전 세계에서 치명적이고 끝나지 않는 전쟁을 주도해 왔습니다. 이민자이자 아프가니스탄 난민의 자녀, 그리고 페미니스트 평화 옹호자로서, 저는 군사주의와 전쟁의 종식을 요구하는 전 세계의 한국 여성 및 페미니스트들과 연대하기 위해 이 걷기에 동참합니다."라고 더 나은 내일을 위한 아프간인(Afghans for a Better Tomorrow)의 사무총장인 아라쉬 아지자다(Arash Azizzada)는 말했습니다.

"디네 시민이자 나바호족의 일원으로서, 저는 군사주의와 자본주의가 어떻게 여러 세대에 걸쳐 원주민들의 땅과 삶을 빼앗아 갔는지 직접 경험했습니다. 대추리 섬에서 거북이 섬까지, 우리는 자본주의 전쟁 기계에 저항하고 지속적인 평화를 요구해야 합니다."라고 디네(나바호) 인권 옹호자인 자넨 야지(Janene Yazzie)는 말했습니다.
국제 대표단은 평화 걷기 외에도 평택, 제주도를 포함한 한반도 전역의 여성 평화 활동가들과의 만남을 통해 협력 관계를 구축하고 전략을 공유할 예정입니다. 대표단 중 대부분은 한국 방문이 처음입니다.

한국전쟁의 공식 종전, 이산가족 상봉, 그리고 여성의 한반도 평화 프로세스 참여를 촉구하기 위해 2015년 역사적인 DMZ 횡단을 감행한 이후, 여성단체 'Women Cross DMZ'는 교육, 옹호, 그리고 조직 활동을 통해 미국 내 평화 협정 체결을 위한 정치적 의지를 구축해 왔습니다. 2019년에는 'Korea Peace Now! Grassroots Network'를 출범시키고 의회에서 최초의 한반도 평화 법안을 발의하는 데 기여했습니다.

Seoul, Korea — Ten years after a delegation of 30 women peace activists made a historic crossing of the Korean Demilitarized Zone to call for an end to the Korean War, an international delegation of diasporic feminist leaders organized by Women Cross DMZ will join South Korean women activists for a peace walk on International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament, May 24, 2025, in Pyeongtaek, Korea.
The walk, which is organized annually by Gyeonggi Women’s Association United, will commemorate the ten-year anniversary of the DMZ crossing and serve as an important reminder of the gendered dimensions of the Korean War. It will be held outside the U.S. Camp Humphreys military base to draw attention to the unresolved war and rampant militarism in Korea.
The international delegation will include Afghan American, Indigenous, Korean American, and South Asian feminist leaders based in the United States. Their transnational act of solidarity is particularly timely as democracy is under attack in the United States, South Korea is on the cusp of electing a new president, and growing tensions between the U.S. and China raise the risk of war in Northeast Asia.
“Women in Korea have been living in the shadow of unresolved war for more than 70 years, bearing the burdens of militarization, division, and separation. We are joining with our sisters from across the globe to take a stand to show that Korean women demand peace and disarmament,” said Lee Jung Ah, Standing Representative, Gyeonggi Women’s Association United.
“South Korea’s women’s rights groups have long highlighted how war and militarism harm women’s rights and gender equality. We walk with international women because global women’s leadership and international solidarity are crucial to ending the Korean War,” Youngmi Cho, Executive Committee Member of the Christian Conference of Asia and Former Executive Director of the Korean Women’s Movement for Peace.
“We are seeing an alarming escalation of militarism in Korea, the U.S., and globally, which threatens democracy. As international feminists, we stand in solidarity with Korean women and uplift calls for lasting peace,” said Cathi Choi, Executive Director of Women Cross DMZ.
“From Afghanistan to Korea, the U.S. has led deadly forever wars across the globe. As an immigrant, child of Afghan refugees, and feminist peace advocate, I am joining the walk in solidarity with Korean women and feminists everywhere calling for an end to militarism and war,” said Arash Azizzada, Co-Director, Afghans for a Better Tomorrow.
“From Rwanda to Bosnia, Kenya, and Nepal, war disproportionately affects women’s lives. My own grandfather was a pilot during the Korean War, and participated in indiscriminate bombing campaigns that killed millions. I am walking in solidarity with Korean women because I know that the violence of war reverberates across generations, and women always pay the steepest price,” said Marie Berry, Professor at the University of Denver, and Director of the Inclusive Global Leadership Initiative (IGLI).
“As a Diné citizen and member of Navajo Nation, I know firsthand how militarism and capitalism have stolen the lands and the lives of generations of Indigenous Peoples. From Daechuri to Turtle Island, we must resist the capitalist war machine and call for lasting peace,” said Janene Yazzie, Diné Human Rights Advocate.
In addition to the peace walk, the international delegation will also hold meetings with fellow women peace organizers across the Korean Peninsula, including at the DMZ, in Pyeongtaek, and at Jeju Island, to build bridges and share tactics. For many in the delegation, it will be their first time in Korea.

About Women Cross DMZ:
Since their historic crossing of the DMZ in 2015 to call for the official end of the Korean War, the reunion of separated families, and women’s participation in the Korea peace process, Women Cross DMZ has been building the political will for a peace agreement in the U.S. through education, advocacy, and organizing.
