What does gender have to do with the Korean War?

February 27, 2024

Posted in: Newsletters

Dear Friend,

This International Women’s Day, join us for a webinar with two renowned feminist scholar-activists on “The Gendered Impact of the Korean War: Past, Present, and Future.”

Suzy Kim, professor of Korean history at Rutgers University, will provide a historical account of how North Korean and international women intervened during the Korean War. Na-Young Lee, professor at Chung-Ang University and Chair of the Board at the Korean Council for the Justice and Remembrance for the Issues of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan, will discuss the impact of the ongoing war on South Korean women, including militarized sexual violence, and efforts underway to hold the South Korean government and U.S. military accountable.

The event will be held on March 6 at 7pm ET and moderated by Ji-Yeon Yuh, Women Cross DMZ Board Member and professor at Northwestern University.

This is an especially urgent time to advocate for peace in Congress. Register here by Friday, March 1.

  • SAVE THE DATE: We’re excited to announce the Feminist Peace Summit, May 1-3, in Denver, Colorado! Women Cross DMZ is organizing the conference with MADRE and Grassroots Global Justice Alliance, in partnership with the Inclusive Global Leadership Initiative at the University of Denver. This free gathering will bring together leading activists, academics, policymakers, philanthropists, and others to discuss how we can transform U.S. foreign policies away from endless war and impunity by advancing feminist, anti-militarist, and internationalist values. Stay tuned for more details.

  • READ: Please read and share this op-ed, “Why We Wrote an Open Letter to ‘Independent Lens’ About ‘Beyond Utopia,’” by filmmakers Deann Borshay Liem, Hye-Jung Park, and J.T. Takagi, published in Documentary Magazine.

In peace,

Christine
