As the Biden administration conducts a critical review of North Korea policy, a coalition of national organizations is weighing in with recommendations for a new approach that prioritizes peace and diplomacy.
In a letter addressed to President Biden, the groups urge the administration to commit to principles that would meaningfully advance US-North Korean relations and reduce nuclear risk where decades of pressure have failed. Such principles reflect the growing voices in Congress that recognize the importance of a peace-based approach with North Korea, as demonstrated by the introduction of House Resolution 152, which calls for a formal end to the Korean War and a peace agreement.
Importantly, the organizations highlight the need to formally end the Korean War with a peace agreement if there is to be real progress with North Korea. They further urge the administration to commit to a gradual process toward denuclearization as opposed to a maximalist approach, take interim steps to build confidence and reduce tensions, and make the negotiating table more inclusive.
