[Job Description]

U.S. National Organizer

Women Cross DMZ

Women Cross DMZ (WCDMZ) is seeking a passionate and engaged U.S. National Organizer to lead our grassroots organizing efforts to advocate for an end to the Korean War and a peace agreement. This is a full-time contract position that will start October 1, 2021, and last for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension.

Background

Women Cross DMZ (WCDMZ) is the leading voice in the movement calling for an end to the Korean War with a peace agreement.

In 2019, WCDMZ, along with Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and the South Korean-based Korean Women’s Movement for Peace, launched Korea Peace Now!, an international campaign calling for an end to the Korean War, the lifting of broad-based sanctions, and women’s inclusion in the peace process.

Through education, advocacy and organizing, the campaign focuses on urging the United States, United Nations and select countries to shift their policies of “maximum pressure” against North Korea towards one of engagement and genuine diplomacy for the goal of lasting peace. Our campaign presents a critical opportunity to advance peace on the Korean Peninsula and redefine the militarized U.S. national security discourse towards a feminist foreign policy built on genuine human security.

Objectives

The U.S. National Organizer will lead organizing efforts and help develop strategy to engage key constituencies across the United States to advocate for lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. This person will act as the lead coordinator of the Korea Peace Now! Grassroots Network, which includes 11 chapters around the country, as well as faith-based, Korean-speaking, and younger generation groups. Working under the direct supervision of WCDMZ’s National Campaign and Advocacy Strategist, this person will participate in regular meetings with the grassroots chapters and regional coordinators, and coordinate efforts with the Women Cross DMZ team and Korea Peace Now! international members.

The ideal candidate will be bilingual (English and Korean) and have experience engaging multi-generational Korean Americans, students, veterans, anti-war activists and a broad range of organizations, including grassroots, peace/anti-militarism, social justice and people of color-led groups challenging war and militarism. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively and independently are key.

Responsibilities:

 1) Coordination and Communication

  • With guidance from the U.S. National Campaign and Advocacy Strategist, and in close coordination with the WCDMZ team, develop a U.S. national organizing strategy and six-month/annual work plan.
  • Send regular updates to Korea Peace Now! Grassroots Network using Action Network
  • Closely coordinate and communicate with WCDMZ’s U.S. National Campaign and Advocacy Strategist, Executive Director, the rest of the WCDMZ team and the Korea Peace Now! Grassroots Network, including attending key meetings and providing updates
  • Produce monthly report for WCDMZ Board of Directors on progress in building key constituencies for action and key activities (to be included in monthly WCDMZ e-newsletter and for donor reports)
  • Attend weekly calls of the WCDMZ team to give updates on organizing efforts

2) Organizing and Advocacy

  • With guidance from the U.S. National Campaign and Advocacy Strategist, organize the U.S. campaign for peace in Korea — including organizing strategic events, letter campaigns, and lobby days.
  • With guidance from the U.S. National Campaign and Advocacy Strategist, cultivate the grassroots base by providing strategic direction, including providing support for regional chapters of the Korea Peace Now! Grassroots Network and the chapter coordinators.
  • Work with the Advocacy Coordinator to coordinate advocacy and grassroots efforts at the Congressional level
  • Organize activities to cultivate younger generation activists, including organizing KPNGN campus chapters.
  • Travel and/or attend regional and international meetings and maintain contacts to advance advocacy strategy.

3) Analysis, Speaking, and Media

  • Keep abreast of relevant political developments related to Korea peace process and contribute to developing a shared analysis among the WCDMZ staff and campaign partners
  • Participate in occasional trainings to develop media skills — including social media, radio/TV interviews, writing op-eds, etc.
  • Occasionally speak at events (virtual and in-person) related to Korea peace
  • Working with the Director of Communications, occasionally write op-eds, letters to the editor, and press releases about grassroots efforts. Ideally, the candidate will be able to communicate with the Korean media.

4) Project management, planning and reporting

  • Provide monthly progress reports on campaign.
  • Track project activities, communications, tasks and progress in key objectives.
  • Update and assess progress made in accordance with work plan.
  • Manage project budget and other expenses with monthly submissions for reimbursements.
  • Adhere to administrative and record-keeping guidelines to support Finance/Admin.
